How do I save and reuse my AI prompts?

Keep your best prompts in one place, give them clear names and tags, turn the changing parts into blanks, and make them easy to reach from the AI tools you use. Here's a simple system.

Direct answer

Save every prompt that gave you a good result in one place, with a clear title and tags. Replace the parts that change with blanks so it works next time, keep a note of what changed when you improve it, and make the collection reachable from the AI tools you use. A notes app works for a few prompts; a prompt library is easier once you have dozens.

Why prompts get lost

Good prompts usually live in chat history, which is hard to search and mixes your best prompt with dozens of failed attempts. The next time you need it, you rewrite it from memory and get a worse result.

A simple system that works

Save it the moment it works

When a prompt gives you a result you'd use, copy it out right away, before you move on.

Name it by the job, not the date

"Customer refund reply" is findable. "Prompt 14" isn't. Add a couple of tags such as the team or the tool it's for.

Turn the changing parts into blanks

Replace names, topics and numbers with blanks like {{customer_name}}, so the prompt becomes a reusable template.

Keep versions when you improve it

When you tweak a prompt, keep the old version. Sometimes the change makes things worse and you'll want to go back.

Put it where you work

A prompt you have to go and find is a prompt you won't use. Keep your collection a click away from ChatGPT, Claude or whichever tool you use.

Where to keep your prompts

  • A notes app or doc works for a handful of prompts, but prompts get edited in place and copying them out each time is slow. See PromptPal vs Notion.
  • Your AI app's saved features (custom instructions, projects) help inside that one app only.
  • A prompt library like PromptPal is built for this: search, tags, blanks, versions, and access from inside your AI tools.

How it works in PromptPal

  1. Save a prompt to your Library, or let PromptPal write one from a plain description and save that.
  2. Use {{blanks}} for the parts that change; PromptPal asks you to fill them in when you use the prompt.
  3. Search by words in the title, text or tags.
  4. On paid plans, every edit is kept in version history (the last 20 versions on Starter, unlimited on Pro).
  5. Use your prompts inside ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini with the Chrome extension, or connect Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor on paid plans.

The free plan includes prompt saving, collections, favourites, basic search and 5 templates.

FAQs

Can I save prompts inside ChatGPT?

ChatGPT keeps your chat history and custom instructions, but it doesn't have a searchable prompt library with templates and versions. Many people keep prompts in a separate tool and bring them into ChatGPT when needed.

How many prompts should I save?

Save any prompt you'd use again. Most people end up with a core set of 10 to 30 prompts they use every week.

Can I share saved prompts with my team?

Yes. PromptPal's team plans add shared workspaces so everyone uses the same, approved prompts.
